A: As a former airline pilot of 8 years flying for ExpressJet Airlines, I really wanted to find a career that would afford me the opportunity to settle down and plant roots in one place. Houston was my last base with the airlines. I fell in love with the city and the people here. I loved the fact that real estate afforded me the opportunity for creating my own success while helping people achieve their dreams of home ownership. Q: What is the most interesting thing that happened during an open house you hosted? A: The most interesting and shocking thing that I’ve experienced was preparing for an open house for a listing that a friend of mine had. I didn’t know much about the home so I arrived early to familiarize myself with the home. As I was turning on the lights I made my way to the third floor, and got quite the startle when I opened up the door to the bonus room only to find a mounted elk head staring me right in the face. I was completely unprepared for that, but after the initial shock, I got quite a good laugh about the situation. Q: What was your favorite moment in your career so far? A: I am most proud of how quickly I have been able to grow my business. I am not originally from Houston or Texas, for that matter. Most agents starting out will tell you that their greatest source of business is personal referrals from friends and family, but I didn’t have that luxury of personal referrals when I got my license. I found creative ways to gain attention from clever advertising stunts to co-hosting a 2 hour radio show on iHeartRadio for several years. Q: What do you wish you had known when you first got your real estate license? A: I wish I had known how much time it takes to be successful in real estate. It looks like a “fun” job on the outside, with all the social networking events and whatnot, but it sometimes takes 15-16 hour days to get the job done and done well. I’m never really off the clock in the business. Clients reach out at all hours of the day, night and weekends. You can’t clock in and clock out and be successful in this business. Q: In what ways have you seen the real estate industry change since you started? A:  I would say the most fundamental change in the industry has been the advancement of technology. Nearly every home for sale, even for sale by owners, are online and accessible on mobile devices. The first showing is now done on the internet, while the second showing is done in person. Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job? A: The most challenging part of my job is juggling work/life balance. I absolutely love real estate. I don’t mind working late nights and on the weekends. I do remain aware that I have a family and personal time is just as important. Q: If you could sum up being a real estate agent in five words or less, what would you say? A: Hustle now, rest later.
